Tacoma History

The year is 1905 and my name is George Denniss. Today is the first day I am attending Tacoma Public School. I live on the north side of Wyong River at 65 Wolseley Ave so I will have to row the boat over with my brothers Charles, Claude and William. The Principal's name is Mr Smee and he is really mean. My brothers tease him so they are always in trouble. They are caned regularly. Punishment is also to bang the dusters against a tree outside but I think that would be fun. The best part of going to school is, not going to school. When it rains the river and school flood so we can't get there. That's how we like it!

The lakes are very high now since lots of rain has fallen. The Tacoma School is closed because the track along which we have to travel is covered with water about one foot deep. My mother says it is time something was done to make an entrance to the school grounds so the children can keep their feet dry.

My father spoke with some of the other parents and they have decided to move the school to a better site behind the house at 14 South Tacoma Road. Thanks Dad!

Years have past and I read the the local paper that the old Tacoma School has finally closed its doors, a fine modern brick building is being built on the north side of the river in Hillcrest Avenue.
